Please contact your local MI-SBTDCTM to inquire about new venture assistance and trainings that are provided in your area. You may also visit your local Business Information Center, browse the small business section of a local bookstore or library, or refer to online Internet resources.
How do I register my business name?
To register your business name locally, contact your local county clerk's office. To register your business name statewide, please contact the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services Bureau of Commercial Services-Corporation Division (517-241-6470).
Where can I find a grant to start my small business?
Grant monies are usually not available for new venture businesses, with a few exceptions of high technology businesses. You may find grant information at your local library, www.cfda.gov, or www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html
How can the MI-SBTDC help my business?
The MI-SBTDC provides no cost one-to-one counsel, low cost education workshops, and market research/information. Business counsel is offered in the areas of financial management, marketing, human resources, operations, and information technology. Topics for workshops and trainings include "nuts and bolts" for starting a business, market research, writing a business plan, understanding financials, legal issues, marketing, selling, patents & copyrights, new product development, and accessing financing.
How do I know if my business needs a license?
Some occupations, professions and business activities require certification or licensing at the state or local level. To find out whether this is required of your business contact the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services Bureau of Commercial Services-Licensing Division (517-241-6470). Additionally, you may search the state license database on the Michigan Economic Development Corporation web site medc.michigan.org/services/license. Also, check with your county and city clerks for information about local licenses. For zoning questions check with your local township.
If you sell tangible personal property to the end user from a Michigan location you may have to register for sales tax. Call 1-800-367-6263.
